brought bananas to the rest of the world during the 4th century
B.C. Since then, bananas have made their way across continents,
becoming a staple in diets everywhere. The day itself is an
invitation to celebrate bananas in all their glory, from smoothies

August 27: National Peach Day: --
Celebrates one of summertime's most scrumptious fruits! August is
prime peach season in the U.S. and we want everyone to enjoy a few
peaches, plus remember the hardworking peach growers who provide
us with this delicious fruit. Summertime brings plenty of
opportunity to enjoy fresh fruits, especially a flavorful, juicy
peach. Local farmers' markets and orchids are busy picking peaches
to deliver to anxious peach lovers. Whether you enjoy a peach by
itself or use your peaches for canning and baking, National Peach
Day is here to encourage you to celebrate this wonderful food
holiday. The history of the peach begins in China and Central Asia
dating back 4,000 years. In Chinese culture, peaches are a symbol
of immortality and longevity. However, peaches were not just a
delicious food, they were also an expensive and highly traded
commodity along the ancient Silk Road in Asia. The Silk Road is
one of the most important trade routes in history that allowed for
goods to be transported between East and West Asia. Transporting
peaches on the Silk Road led to introducing the fruit to other
parts of the country, and eventually the world. Peaches made their
way to the U.S. some time during the 17th century. Settlers from
Europe and Spain began cultivating peaches upon arrival. However,
it's uncertain who receives credit for introducing them first.
Spanish explorers and missionaries were known to bring peach pits
to Florida and Southwest and planting them. English settlers began
cultivating peaches in Virginia around the same time. It's
possible both Spanish and English settlers receive equal credit
because of the location they landed and began growing peaches.
Production of peaches happens along the south eastern and southern
parts of the country. Peach farmers work to provide peach
varieties that grow well in different parts of the U.S. Peach
farming requires dedication, knowledge, and in-depth management to
maintain healthy peach orchids. However, peach farmers are
passionate about their work to provide delicious peaches to
consumers. They work endless hours growing, managing, and
harvesting peaches to transport to markets, grocery stores, and
other destinations. Thanks to these hardworking people, we are
able to use peaches in dishes, desserts, sauces, and preservatives
daily. On Sale Until Midnight Tonight PT!

August 27: International Bat Night: --
Bats have many places in literature and history, and serve roles
both dark and hilarious depending on where you find them. Probably
the most common association with the bat is with vampires, but
there is also the fun-loving bat from Ferngully (Batty Coda) along
with a host of other characters from literature and cinema. But
bats have an important role to play in our eco-system, and some of
them are becoming endangered. International Bat Night serves to
raise awareness from our flying rodent friends and why they
deserve to be protected. International Bat Night is a date that
takes place every year to celebrate these creatures, with a number
of different bat events taking place around the world for the
public to get involved with. These events give you the opportunity
to help bat conservation and to learn more about these creatures.
There are talks at dusk and fun bat walks; it is definitely the
sort of activity you should experience at least once, as it will
give you a unique opportunity to get up close and personal with
these incredible animals and to learn more about them. When we say
that bats are incredible creatures, we do not expect you to simply
take our word for it. After all, bats are the only mammals that
can fly. They also use echolocation in order to get around during
the night. As you probably know, bats do most of their living when
it is dark and they cannot see very well. Because of this, they
need to depend on other navigational skills, instead of sight.
They send out beeps, listening for variations in the echoes that
bounce back in order to understand where they are and to get
around effectively. Bats have gotten a bit of a bad reputation
over the years. However, most of this is unjustified. A lot of
people think that bats, especially those in North America, go
around infecting people with rabies and a whole host of other
toxins and diseases. This is something that has merely become a
rumor because of the television and movies. In fact, bats avoid
people, and only 10 people in the last 50 years have contracted
rabies from North American bats. If you are one of the incredibly
unlucky ones to get bitten by a bat, make sure you go to see your
doctor as soon as possible, but don't panic, bats really aren't as
scary as it is made out in the films! Vampire bats also don't suck
blood, contrary to popular belief. Okay, they do lap it up, but
calm down! There are actually only three species of vampire bats
across the globe. International Bat Night was established to help
promote the good image of bats, and to help start creating some
clarity on the facts about them above and beyond the rumors and
Hollywood image. While we often think of bats as nocturnal
predators feasting on the blood of the innocent and harboring
rabies, the truth is quite different. Yes, there are bats that
feed on blood, but they mostly feed on insects and believe us, you
want bats to be out there patrolling the night and helping
eliminate them. Bats are one of the major contributors to keeping
down obnoxious night insects like mosquitoes, and if you're a
camper, you know how unpleasant mosquitoes can make an otherwise
pleasant camping expedition. There are also bats that feed on
nectar and fruit, and actually help to pollinate and spread the
seed of plants, in many cases they're the only ones working to
help those plants procreate! These are just the beginnings of the
wonders that bats possess, and there is far more just a flicker
away, and International Bat Night is a great time to spend
learning about them! On Sale Until Midnight Tonight PT!

August 27: National Petroleum Day: -- The
purpose of the day is to raise awareness about industry issues and
to recognize the importance and effect of petroleum resources in
our lives. It is a day to honor this priceless natural resource
and the great amount of good it has done for humanity, national
wealth, and our lives in the 21st century. Many people in the oil
and gas business utilize the event as a forum to talk about the
difficulties that they confront. Petroleum, often known as crude
oil or oil, is a yellowish-black liquid that forms spontaneously
in geological formations. It's frequently processed into a variety
of fuels and chemicals. Since ancient times, petroleum has been
employed in some form or another. Petroleum was one of the
materials used to construct Babylon's walls, according to
Herodotus, a great Greek historian. Petroleum was also employed by
the ancient Persians for lighting, as it was used to fill their
lamps, as well as for medical uses. James Young, a Scottish
chemist, began distilling petroleum in the mid-1800s, yielding
kerosene as well as a thicker, darker oil that was ideal for
lubricating machines. Petroleum has been used in ancient China for
more than 2,000 years. Oil was found, extracted, and utilized in
China for the first time in the 1st century B.C., according to the
"I Ching," one of the earliest Chinese books.
Furthermore, as early as the 4th century B.C., the Chinese were
the first to record the use of petroleum as a fuel. Oil was being
produced in China from bamboo-drilled wells by 347 A.D. Since the
18th century, oil sands have been extracted. Young discovered
natural petroleum seepage at Alfreton's Riddings colliery and by
1848, he had established a modest business refining the crude oil.
Young finally succeeded in extracting a number of valuable liquids
from it, one of which he dubbed "paraffine oil." Young
formed a partnership in 1851, which resulted in the world's first
commercial oil refinery and the world's first modern oil refinery.

August 27: International Lottery Day: --
Lottery, lotterie, loteria - no matter what language, people
around the world love lottery games! International Lottery Day is
a day filled with excitement, dreams, and possibilities. It's a
time when people across the globe come together to try their luck
in lotteries, hoping for that life-changing win. The thrill of
anticipation, the moment just before the numbers are called, keeps
many people on the edge of their seats. It's not just about the
big prizes; it's about the hope and joy that comes with the
possibility of winning. International Lottery Day is celebrated
because lotteries have a unique way of bringing people together.
Whether it's buying a ticket on a whim or joining a lottery pool
with friends, the shared experience of hoping for a win can be
incredibly bonding. Additionally, many lotteries support important
causes, from education to health programs, making every ticket
more than just a chance at wealth but also a contribution to
society. The day highlights the fun and potential good that comes
from this popular form of entertainment.? While there isn't a
single person or event that marks its beginning, the day emerged
from a collective desire to celebrate lotteries' long history and
their role in society. The tradition of lotteries dates back
centuries, with evidence of them being used in ancient
civilizations to raise funds for public projects and charitable
causes. The idea for International Lottery Day was likely sparked
by those who recognized the joy and excitement that lotteries
bring to millions of people. Supporters of lotteries saw an
opportunity to create a day dedicated to celebrating not only the
thrill of participating in these games but also the good causes
they often support. Over time, this day gained popularity, with
people across the world joining in the celebration. Today,
International Lottery Day is a time to indulge in the excitement
of lottery games while reflecting on their positive impact. The
day serves as a reminder of the historical significance and the
charitable contributions associated with lotteries, making it a
special occasion for enthusiasts and casual players alike?. On

August 27: National Just Because Day: --
Today you don't need a reason to celebrate. Why? Well, just
because! If you want to make spaghetti for breakfast wearing last
year's Halloween costume, more power to you. If you want to climb
a tree as an adult, take the risk. It's a day to stop worrying
about the whys. Just Because Day has also become a great way to
spread random acts of kindness. Send a thoughtful card to a
friend, just because. Give your grandparents a call, just because.
Pick up the trash from your neighbor's yard, just because! The
original version of Just Because Day may be a movable holiday
called Because Day that was first celebrated on the third
Wednesday in May. It was invented in the late fifties or early
sixties, by Joseph J. Goodwin of Los Gatos, California. He turned
the gift of a transistor radio for his wife into their own family
holiday. For the Goodwin's, It wasn't so much about a radio as it
was about celebrating life, free afternoons, and family. And so,
what began as a wholesome family holiday celebrating the beauty of
spontaneity in life, grew into an annual celebration across the
United States. As we grow up and assimilate into the world, we
tend to fall in line with always doing what is expected of us. And
for many people, that might get a little boring. On this very
special day, these unspoken rules society hath paved before us no
longer apply. This day is your golden opportunity to do whatever
it is your heart desires. This day is to encourage you to march at
the beat of your own drum. Your chance to do something with no
rhyme or reason. Whether you want to drink milk wearing a cow
onesie, going on an impromptu road trip anywhere, or surprise a
friend with flowers. This day is your chance to add a little
spontaneity to your life. It's also a golden opportunity to spread
some positivity to others! Pay a tab for the table next to you.

August 27: Lyndon Baines Johnson Day: --
Held every year to honor the birthday of this former President of
the United States. Lyndon Baines Johnson, also sometimes known as
L.B.J., was an American educator and politician who was the 36th
President of the United States from 1963 to 1969, after previously
serving as the 37th Vice President. Following his death in 1973,
the Texas State Legislature established a legal state holiday to
memorialize the 36th President of the United States and a native
son of the state. Lyndon Baines Johnson was born in Texas, a few
miles from Johnson City, which his family helped establish. Before
entering politics, Johnson worked as a high school teacher. On
November 17, 1934, Johnson married Claudia Alta Taylor, also known
as "Lady Bird." The couple met after he had attended
Georgetown University Law Center for several months, but he later
quit in 1934 after the first semester. He had asked her to marry
him on their first date. She refused but finally agreed. The
couple had two daughters, Lynda Bird, born in 1944, and Luci
Baines, born in 1947. In 1937, he was elected to the House of
Representatives. In the 1960 presidential election, Johnson ran
for the Democratic candidacy but lost. Senator John F. Kennedy of
Massachusetts won the nomination and chose Johnson as his running
mate. They went on to win the election, and on January 20, 1961,
Johnson was inaugurated as Vice President. After John F. Kennedy's
assassination in 1963, Johnson became President. In the 1964
election, Johnson ran for a full term and defeated Republican
Arizona Senator Barry by a landslide. With 61% of the vote,
Johnson was elected President. Johnson was sworn in as the 36th
President of the United States to create "A Great Society"
for the citizens of the United States. In 1968, Johnson did not
seek re-election after Senator Eugene McCarthy announced his
campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination, a first for a
party with a sitting president. Johnson made a television
announcement shortly after that he would neither seek nor accept
his party's presidential candidacy. Johnson died of a heart attack
on January 22, 1973, at his Texas ranch. Following his death, the
Texas State Legislature established August 27 as a legal state

Discovery And Exploration Of The Solar System: Space Probes:
Interplanetary Space Probes: The United States Space Program: The
Mariner Program: Mariner 2 (Mariner-Venus 1962): -- The first
spacecraft to conduct a successful planetary encounter occurs when
the Mariner 2 robotic space probe is launched at 06:53:14 UTC from
the Cape Canaveral Launch Complex 12 (LC-12) launch pad atop the
Atlas LV-3 Agena-B expendable launch system on a mission to Venus,
where on December 14, 1962 it sent back back during its flyby of
34,773 kilometers (21,607 mi) from Venus the first information
ever received from another planet. The first successful spacecraft
in the NASA Mariner program, it was a simplified version of the
Block I spacecraft of the Ranger program and an exact copy of
Mariner 1. The missions of the Mariner 1 and 2 spacecraft are
sometimes known as the Mariner R missions. Original plans called
for the probes to be launched on the Atlas-Centaur, but serious
developmental problems with that vehicle forced a switch to the
much smaller Agena B second stage. As such, the design of the
Mariner R vehicles was greatly simplified. Far less
instrumentation was carried than on the Soviet Venera probes of
this period - for example, forgoing a TV camera-as the Atlas-Agena
B had only half as much lift capacity as the Soviet 8K78 booster.
The Mariner probe consisted of a 100 cm (39.4 in) diameter
hexagonal bus, to which solar panels, instrument booms, and
antennas were attached. The scientific instruments on board the
Mariner spacecraft were: two radiometers (one each for the
microwave and infrared portions of the spectrum), a micrometeorite
sensor, a solar plasma sensor, a charged particle sensor, and a
magnetometer. These instruments were designed to measure the
temperature distribution on the surface of Venus and to make basic
measurements of Venus' atmosphere. The primary mission was to
receive communications from the spacecraft in the vicinity of
Venus and to perform radiometric temperature measurements of the
planet. A second objective was to measure the interplanetary
magnetic field and charged particle environment. En route to
Venus, Mariner 2 measured the solar wind, a constant stream of
charged particles flowing outwards from the Sun, confirming the
measurements by Luna 1 in 1959. It also measured interplanetary
dust, which turned out to be scarcer than predicted. In addition,
Mariner 2 detected high-energy charged particles coming from the
Sun, including several brief solar flares, as well as cosmic rays
from outside the Solar System. As it flew by Venus on December 14,
1962, Mariner 2 scanned the planet with its pair of radiometers,
revealing that Venus has cool clouds and an extremely hot surface.

August 27, 1908: #BOTD: #HBD! Lyndon B.
Johnson, American lieutenant and politician, 36th President of the
United States and Freemason (Entered Apprentice) (d. January 22,
1973) is #born Lyndon Baines Johnson near Stonewall, Texas. Often
referred to as LBJ, he was an American politician who served as
both congressman and senator of state of Texas, 37th vice
president of the United States from 1961 to 1963, and 36th
president of the United States from 1963 to 1969, was born in a
farmhouse in Stonewall, Texas to a local political family. He
assumed the presidency following the assassination of President
John F. Kennedy. A Democrat from Texas, Johnson was also a United
States representative and later a very powerful majority leader in
the United States Senate. Johnson worked as a high school teacher
and a congressional aide before winning election to the U.S. House
of Representatives in 1937. Johnson won election to the United
States Senate from Texas in 1948 after narrowly winning the
Democratic Party's nomination. He was appointed to the position of
Senate Majority Whip in 1951. He became the Senate leader of the
Democrats in 1953. He became known for his domineering personality
and the "Johnson treatment", his aggressive coercion of
powerful politicians to advance legislation. Johnson ran for the
Democratic nomination in the 1960 presidential election. Although
unsuccessful, he became the running mate of the nominee Senator
John F. Kennedy and they went on to win a close election. On
November 22, 1963, Kennedy was assassinated and Johnson succeeded
him as president. In the 1964 Presidential election, Johnson won
in a landslide, defeating Senator Barry Goldwater. With 61.1
percent of the popular vote, Johnson won the largest share of the
popular vote of any candidate since 1820. In domestic policy,
Johnson's "Great Society" and "War On Poverty"
programs led to legislation to expand civil rights, public
broadcasting, Medicare, Medicaid, aid to education and the arts,
urban and rural development, and public services. Assisted by a
strong economy, the War On Poverty helped millions of Americans
rise above the poverty line during his administration. In foreign
policy, Johnson escalated American involvement in the Vietnam War.
In 1964, Congress passed the Gulf Of Tonkin Resolution, which
granted Johnson the power to use military force in Southeast Asia
without having to ask for an official declaration of war. The
number of American military personnel in Vietnam increased
dramatically, from 16,000 advisors in non-combat roles in 1963 to
525,000 in 1967, many in combat roles. American casualties soared
and the peace process stagnated. Growing unease with the war
stimulated a large, angry anti-war movement based chiefly among
draft-age students on university campuses. Unlike the majority of
southern politicians, he opposed racial segregation, signing civil
rights bills to ban racial discrimination in public facilities,
interstate commerce, the workplace and housing. The Voting Rights
Act ended the mass disenfranchisement of African Americans in the
South, and the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 permitted
greater immigration from regions other than Europe. Johnson's
presidency marked the peak of modern liberalism in the United
States. Johnson faced further troubles when summer riots began in
major cities in 1965 and crime rates soared, as his political
opponents raised demands for "law and order" policies.
While Johnson began his presidency with widespread approval,
support for him declined as the public became frustrated with both
the war and social unrest. In 1968, he ended his bid for
renomination after a disappointing result in the New Hampshire
primary. He was succeeded by Richard Nixon in January 1969.
Johnson returned to his Texas ranch, where he died of a heart
attack four years later, at approximately 3:39 p.m. on January 22,
1973, of a massive heart attack in his bedroom in Stonewall,
Texas, the town of his birth, aged 64. He managed to telephone the
Secret Service agents on the ranch, who found him still holding
the telephone receiver, unconscious and not breathing. Johnson was
airlifted in one of his planes to San Antonio and taken to Brooke
Army Medical Center, where cardiologist and Army colonel Dr.
George McGranahan pronounced him dead on arrival. Ten days
earlier, Johnson recorded an hour-long television interview with
newsman Walter Cronkite at his ranch on January 12, 1973, in which
he discussed his legacy, particularly about the civil rights
movement. He was still smoking heavily at the time, and told
Cronkite that it was better for his heart "to smoke than to
be nervous". Accordingly, shortly after Johnson's death, his
press secretary Tom Johnson telephoned the newsroom at CBS.
Cronkite was live on the air with CBS Evening News at the time,
and a report on Vietnam was airing. The call was patched through
to Cronkite, and while Johnson relayed the information the
director cut out of the report to return to the news desk.
Cronkite, still on the phone, kept Johnson on the call while he
gathered whatever available relevant information, then repeated it
to his viewers. Johnson's death came two days after Richard
Nixon's second inauguration, which followed Nixon's landslide
victory in the 1972 election. After lying in state in the Rotunda
of the U.S. Capitol, Johnson was honored with a state funeral in
which Texas Congressman J. J. Pickle and former Secretary Of State
Dean Rusk eulogized him at the Capitol. The final services took
place on January 25. The funeral was held at the National City
Christian Church in Washington, D.C., where he had often worshiped
as president. The service was presided over by President Richard
Nixon and attended by foreign dignitaries, led by former Japanese
prime minister Eisaku Sato, who served as Japanese prime minister
during Johnson's presidency. Eulogies were given by the Rev. Dr.
George Davis, the church's pastor, and W. Marvin Watson, former
postmaster general. Nixon did not speak, though he attended, as is
customary for presidents during state funerals, but the eulogists
turned to him and lauded him for his tributes, as Rusk did the day
before, as Nixon mentioned Johnson's death in a speech he gave the
day after Johnson died, announcing the peace agreement to end the
Vietnam War. Johnson was buried in his family's private cemetery a
few yards from the house in which he was born. Eulogies were given
by former Texas governor John Connally and the Reverend Billy
Graham, the minister who officiated at the burial rites. The state
funeral, the last for a president until Richard Nixon's in 1994,
was part of an unexpectedly busy week in Washington, as the
Military District of Washington (MDW) dealt with its second major
task in less than a week, beginning with Nixon's second
inauguration. The inauguration affected the state funeral in
various ways, because Johnson died only two days after the
inauguration. The MDW and the Armed Forces Inaugural Committee
canceled the remainder of the ceremonies surrounding the
inauguration, to allow for a full state funeral, and many of the
military men who participated in the inauguration took part in the
funeral. It also meant that Johnson's casket traveled the entire
length of the Capitol, entering through the Senate wing when taken
into the rotunda to lie in state and exiting through the House
wing steps due to inauguration construction on the East Front
steps. Johnson is ranked favorably by many historians because of
his domestic policies and the passage of many major laws that
affected civil rights, gun control, wilderness preservation, and
Social Security, although he has also drawn heavy criticism for
his policies in the Vietnam War, and conservative criticism for
the growth of the federal government and Great Society programs.

Zheng Chenggong (Wade-Giles romanization: Cheng Ch'eng-kung),
Western name Koxinga, or Coxinga, pirate leader of Ming forces
against the Manchu conquerors of China, best known for
establishing Chinese control over Taiwan (d. June 23, 1662,
Taiwan) is #born in a small Japanese coastal town to a Japanese
mother and a Chinese father, Zheng Zhilong, a maritime adventurer
who made a fortune through trade and piracy in the Taiwan Strait.
Zheng Chenggong was raised by his mother in Japan until the age of
seven, when his father, having been given an official position in
maritime defense by the Ming dynasty, recalled him to the
ancestral home in southern Fujian. There, separated from his
mother, Zheng was given the conventional scholarly Confucian
education, entering the Imperial Academy of Learning at Nanjing in
1644. With the fall of the southern capital to the invading Manchu
(Qing) troops the next year, young Zheng retired with his father
to Fujian, where Zheng Zhilong's military power was the basis for
setting up the prince of Tang as pretender to the Ming throne. It
was at this juncture that, as a sign of special favour, the Ming
prince conferred the imperial surname, Zhu, upon the youthful
Zheng Chenggong. Thus originated his most commonly used title,
Guoxingye ("Lord of the Imperial Surname"), corrupted by
the Dutch into Koxinga. When Manchu forces entered Fujian, his
father succumbed to their offers of preferment under the new Qing
(Manchu) dynasty and abandoned the fragile Ming court at Fuzhou.
The prince of Tang was captured and killed; but Zheng Chenggong,
resisting his father's orders to abandon a lost cause, vowed to
restore the Ming dynasty and began to build up land and naval
forces for that purpose. Over the next 12 years the Manchu's
preoccupation with larger Ming remnants in the southwest, plus
Zheng's considerable strategic and organizational talents, allowed
Zheng to build a strong position on the Fujian coast, centred on
the islands of Xiamen (Amoy) and Jinmen (Quemoy). Although this
region was in effect his personal kingdom, he continued to use
Ming reign titles and to acknowledge the suzerainty of the last
Ming pretender-the prince of Gui in southwestern China. He also
consistently refused blandishments of rank and power from the
Qing, even those supported by personal entreaties from his father.
In 1659 Zheng launched his most ambitious military campaign, a
maritime expedition with more than 100,000 troops up the Yangtze
River (Chang Jiang). With large Qing forces still campaigning in
the south, he achieved remarkable initial success, smashing
through the lower Yangtze defenses to the gates of Nanjing. There,
however, mistaken strategy and failure to heed his field
commanders' advice led to a disastrous defeat. Get a Britannica

back to his original base of Xiamen, Zheng was still unbeatable at
sea; but the collapse of Ming resistance in the southwest and the
Qing's new policy of forced inland emigration of the coastal
population put him in a dangerous position. In these circumstances
he hit upon the plan of taking Taiwan from the Dutch as a secure
rear base area. In April 1661 he landed on Taiwan near the main
Dutch stronghold at Anping (near present-day Tainan) with a force
of more than 25,000 men. After a nine-month siege, the small Dutch
garrison capitulated and were allowed to leave Tainan safely with
their personal possessions. Zheng followed this military success
by setting up an effective civil administration based on Taiwan
and settling the island with his soldiers and with refugees
brought from Fujian. His larger ambitions on the mainland and
half-formed plans for ousting the Spaniards from the Philippines,
however, were cut short by his premature death in June 1662. His
son, Zheng Jing, used the Taiwan base to sustain the anti-Qing
struggle for another 20 years. But after his death in 1681, the
Zheng kingdom on Taiwan fell to a Qing invasion fleet in 1683.
This defeat ended the longest lived of the Ming restorationist
movements. Thus Zheng's plans ultimately failed, but his
posthumous reputation has grown to remarkable proportions. In
Japan the famous 18th-century playwright Chikamatsu Monzaemon's
Kokusenya kassen (1715; The Battles of Coxinga made Zheng as well
known to Japanese audiences as Othello is to the English. In
Europe, lurid Dutch accounts of the fall of Formosa (Taiwan)
established Zheng as one of the few Chinese historical figures to
bear a Latinized name. In his own country he soon became a popular
deity and cultural hero to the early Chinese settlers of
Taiwan-Kaishan Shengwang ("Sage King Who Settled the
Country"). On the official level, in 1875 the Qing court
recognized its old antagonist as a paragon of loyalty and
established an official temple to him on Taiwan. The development
of modern Chinese nationalism in the 20th century put Zheng
Chenggong in the front ranks of China's historical heroes. To the
anti-Qing revolutionaries of the early 1900s he was a natural
forebear. To Republican-period nationalists he was a symbol of
resistance against foreign invaders. Later, he continued to
receive the accolade of "national hero" from both the
Nationalists on Taiwan for his determination to restore proper
Chinese rule and from the communists on the mainland mainly for
his great victory over Western (Dutch) imperialism. In his own day
a martyr to a lost cause, Zheng Chenggong became a hero to all
sides in modern Chinese politics, although to each for a different
reason. Zheng Chenggong died of malaria, only a few months after
defeating the Dutch in Taiwan, in Anping, Kingdom Of Tungning
(modern Southwest Taiwan) at the age of 37. There were
speculations that he died in a sudden fit of madness when his
officers refused to carry out his orders to execute his son Zheng
Jing, who had had an affair with his wet nurse and conceived a
child with her. As Koxinga descended into death, he relented and
agreed to let his son Zheng Jing succeed him as King Of Tungning.
Koxinga died as he passed into delirium and madness and expressed
his regrets to his family and father. He was buried in The Koxinga
Ancestral Shrine (Chinese: Zhengchenggong Zumiao), a family shrine
built in the West Central District, Tainan, Taiwan in 1663 by
Koxinga's on Zheng Jing, the same son Koxinga had ordered killed,
in order to worship his father. Tainan, now officially known as
Tainan City, is a special municipality in southern Taiwan facing
the Taiwan Strait on its western coast, the oldest city on the
island and now commonly called the "prefectural capital"
of Taiwan. When Taiwan became part of the Qing dynasty during The
Manchu Conquest Of China, the Qing moved Koxinga's grave in 1699
across the Taiwan Strait to Fujian on the southeastern coast of
mainland China, and the shrine was renamed "Zheng's Ancestral
Hall" (Chinese: Zheng Shi Da Zongci). The Qing then banned
Koxinga worship, but the people of Taiwan continued to worship him
secretly under the name "Prince Zhu". In 1897, the
shrine was converted into a Shinto shrine by the Japanese
government and renamed Kaizan Shrine (Japanese: Kaizan Jinja) by
the Imperial government during the Japanese occupation of Taiwan.
The Japanese intended to downplay Koxinga's historical reputation
and legacy as a folk hero in order to legitimize their rule of
Taiwan. The conversion of the shrine was part of a larger
assimilation campaign to advance idea that Taiwan was always
separate from China. In the 1960s, the shrine was converted back
to a Confucian one. Similarly to the Japanese campaign, the
Kuomintang government used the shrine as a way to legitimize its
rule against the ascendant People's Republic of China across the
Taiwan Strait and was visited by Chiang Kai-shek. Today, the
official name is "Ancestral Shrine of Koxinga". The
complex is traditional and elegant. There is an old well in front
of the gate and this is all that remains of the original shrine.
The central hall worships the statue of Koxinga as well as the
spirit tablets of each generation of ancestors. In 1771, there was
a famous wooden tablet with the character "Three Generations
Heritage" to prize the virtue of Koxinga's family. In this
shrine, there is also a sculpture of young Koxinga and his mother
Tagawa Matsu. On Sale Until Midnight Tonight PT!

August 27, 1776: The Age Of Enlightenment
(The Enlightenment, The Age Of Reason): The Age Of Revolution: The
Atlantic Revolutions: The American Enlightenment: The American
Revolution: The American Revolutionary War: Battles Of The
American Revolutionary War In New York State: The Battle Of Long
Island (The Battle Of Brooklyn, The Battle Of Brooklyn Heights):
-- In what is now Brooklyn, New York, British forces under General
William Howe defeat Americans under General George Washington in
the first major battle of the American Revolutionary War to take
place after the United States declared its independence on July 4,
1776. The Battle of Long Island is also known as the Battle of
Brooklyn and the Battle of Brooklyn Heights. It was a victory for
the British Army and the beginning of a successful campaign that
gave them control of the strategically important city of New York.
Regarding troop deployment and fighting, it was the largest battle
of the entire war. After defeating the British in the Siege of
Boston on March 17, 1776, commander-in-chief General George
Washington brought the Continental Army to defend the port city of
New York, then limited to the southern end of Manhattan Island.
Washington understood that the city's harbor would provide an
excellent base for the British navy during the campaign, so he
established defenses there and waited for the British to attack.
In July, the British under the command of General William Howe
landed a few miles across the harbor from Manhattan on the
sparsely-populated Staten Island, where they were slowly
reinforced by ships in Lower New York Bay during the next month
and a half, bringing their total force to 32,000 troops.
Washington knew the difficulty in holding the city with the
British fleet in control of the entrance to the harbor at the
Narrows, and he moved the bulk of his forces to Manhattan,
believing that it would be the first target. On August 22, the
British landed on the shores of Gravesend Bay in southwest Kings
County, across the Narrows from Staten Island and more than a
dozen miles south from the established East River crossings to
Manhattan. After five days of waiting, the British attacked U.S.
defenses on the Guan Heights. Unknown to the Americans, however,
Howe had brought his main army around their rear and attacked
their flank soon after. The Americans panicked, resulting in
twenty percent losses through casualties and capture, although a
stand by 400 Maryland troops prevented a more substantial portion
of the army from being lost. The remainder of the army retreated
to the main defenses on Brooklyn Heights. The British dug in for a
siege but, on the night of August 29-30, Washington evacuated the
entire army to Manhattan without the loss of supplies or a single
life. Washington and the Continental Army were driven out of New
York entirely after several more defeats and forced to retreat
through New Jersey and into Pennsylvania. On Sale Until Midnight

August 27, 1859: Oil (Petroleum): The Oil
Industry (The Petroleum Industry): Oil Booms: The Pennsylvania Oil
Rush: -- The oil rush in America begins when Colonel Edwin L.
Drake strikes "rock oil" in the Oil Creek Valley of
Titusville, Pennsylvania, leading to the world's first
commercially successful oil well, the first oil boom in the United
States and the first oil boom in the world. Oil quickly became one
of the most valuable commodities in the United States and
railroads expanded into Western Pennsylvania to ship petroleum to
the rest of the country. Titusville and other towns on the shores
of Oil Creek expanded rapidly as oil wells and refineries shot up
across the region, resulting in The Pennsylvania Oil Rush, an oil
boom of petroleum production in northwestern Pennsylvania which
lasted from Colonel Drake's 1859 discovery of oil in Titusville
until the early 1870s. By the mid-1870s, the oil industry was well
established, particularly in Oil City in Venango County,
Pennsylvania, which became central to the petroleum industry while
hosting headquarters for the Pennzoil, Quaker State, and Wolf's
Head motor oil companies; with the industry's establishment, the
"rush" to drill wells and control production was over.
Pennsylvania oil production peaked in 1891, and was later
surpassed by western states such as Texas and California. Some oil
industry remains in Pennsylvania; Charter Plastics, now located in
a building that once manufactured pressure vessels, stationary
engines and boilers for the oil industry, uses oil in its
production processes. On Sale Until Midnight Tonight PT!

#born Lester Willis Young in Woodville, Mississippi. He come to
prominence while a member of Count Basie's orchestra. Billie
Holiday gave Lester the nickname "Prez" after President
Franklin Roosevelt, the "greatest man around" in
Billie's mind; Prez came to call her "Lady Day", and
their famously empathetic classic recordings with Teddy Wilson,
recognized as the first swing songs, date from this era. In
contrast to many of his hard-driving peers, Young played with a
relaxed, cool tone and used sophisticated harmonies. Known for his
hip, introverted style, he invented or popularized much of the
hipster jargon which came to be associated with the music. Lester
Young died at the age of 49 from internal bleeding due to the
effects of alcoholism in the immediate early morning hours after
his landing in New York City from a transatlantic flight from
Paris, France. He is buried at The Evergreens Cemetery in
Brooklyn, New York. Jazz critic Leonard Feather rode in a taxi to
Lester Young's funeral with Billie Holiday; after the services,

Mexican Border War (1910-1919): The Battle Of Ambos Nogales
(Spanish: "The Battle of Both Nogales") (The Battle Of
27 August [Spanish: La Batalla Del 27 De Agosto]): -- In the only
battle of World War I fought on American soil, elements of U.S.
Army troops of the 35th Infantry Regiment, who were reinforced by
the Buffalo Soldiers of the 10th Cavalry Regiment, and commanded
by Lt. Col. Frederick J. Herman, skirmish against Mexican
Carrancistas (military and civilian militia forces loyal to
Venustiano Carranza, one of the main leaders of the Mexican
Revolution). The Battle Of Ambos Nogales (The Battle Of Both
Nogales), or as it is known in Mexico La batalla del 27 de agosto
(The Battle of 27 August), was fought betwen American forces
stationed in Nogales, Arizona, and Mexican forces in Nogales,
Sonora. This battle was notable for being a significant
confrontation between U.S. and Mexican forces during the Border
War of 1910-1919, which took place in the context of the Mexican
Revolution and the First World War. Prior to the late 1910s, the
international border between the two Nogaleses was a wide-open
boulevard named International Street, but during the course of the
decade the violence associated with the Mexican Revolution and
growing hysteria related to World War I brought stricter U.S.
control of the border. Anti-foreign sentiment grew in the border
region with the publicizing of the German Empire's Zimmermann
telegram in February 1917 (some U.S. military historians of the
10th Cavalry and 25th Infantry later claimed German military
advisors encouraged with Mexican rebels under General Francisco
"Pancho" Villa to fight against the U.S. in Nogales).
Related to the World War I anti-foreign sentiment, the shooting
deaths of Mexican nationals at the border by U.S. soldiers in
Nogales in early 1918 increased racial tensions in the two border
towns. As a result of the August 27 battle, the U.S. and Mexico
agreed to divide the two border communities with a chain-link
border fence, the first of many permanent incarnations of the
U.S.-Mexico border wall between the two cities along the two
countries' border. On Sale Until Midnight Tonight PT!

August 27, 1928: The Aftermath Of World
War I: The Interwar Period (The Interbellum, Between The Wars):
Interwar-Period Treaties: Peace Treaties: The Kellogg-Briand Pact
(The Pact Of Paris, The General Treaty For Renunciation Of War As
An Instrument Of National Policy: -- The Kellogg-Briand Pact is
signed by fifteen nations, including most leading world powers;
ultimately sixty-one nations would sign it, and it went into
effect on July 24, 1929. The Kellogg-Briand Pact bound signatory
states to not use war to resolve "disputes or conflicts of
whatever nature or of whatever origin they may be, which may arise
among them". Parties failing to abide by this promise "should
be denied of the benefits furnished by [the] treaty". It was
signed by Germany, France, and the United States on 27 August
1928, and by most other states soon after. Sponsored by France and
the U.S., the Pact renounces the use of war and calls for the
peaceful settlement of disputes. Eleven years later after the
Paris signing, World War II had begun. Similar provisions were
incorporated into the Charter of the United Nations and other
treaties and it became a stepping-stone to a more activist
American policy. It is named after its authors, United States
Secretary Of State Frank B. Kellogg and French foreign minister
Aristide Briand. The pact was concluded outside the League Of
Nations, and remains in effect. As a practical matter, the
Kellogg-Briand Pact did not live up to all of its aims, but has
arguably had some success. It did not end war or stop the rise of
militarism, and was unable to keep the international peace in
succeeding years. The Pact has been ridiculed for its moralism and
legalism and lack of influence on foreign policy. Moreover, it
erased the legal distinction between war and peace because the
signatories began to wage wars without declaring them. The pact's
central provisions renouncing the use of war, and promoting
peaceful settlement of disputes and the use of collective force to
prevent aggression, were incorporated into the United Nations
Charter and other treaties. Although civil wars continued, wars
between established states have been rare since 1945, with a few
exceptions in the Middle East. One legal consequence is that it is
unlawful to annex territory by force, although other forms of
annexation have not been prevented. More broadly, some authors
claim there is now a strong presumption against the legality of
using, or threatening, military force against another country. The
pact also served as the legal basis for the concept of a crime
against peace, for which the Nuremberg Tribunal and Tokyo Tribunal
tried and executed the top leaders responsible for starting World
War II. Many historians and political scientists see the pact as
mostly irrelevant and ineffective. On Sale Until Midnight Tonight

August 27, 1939: Aviation: The History Of
Aviation: The History Of Military Aviation: Maiden Flights: --
First flight of the turbojet-powered Heinkel He 178, the world'
first practical jet aircraft. It was a private venture by the
German Heinkel company in accordance with director Ernst Heinkel's
emphasis on developing technology for high-speed flight. It first
flew on 27 August 1939, piloted by Erich Warsitz, who had also
flown the world's first rocket powered airplane, the Heinkel He
176, on its maiden flight in June 1939. This flight had been
preceded by a short hop three days earlier. In 1936, a young
engineer named Hans von Ohain had taken out a patent on using the
exhaust from a gas turbine as a means of propulsion. It was the
first operational jet engine. Ohain started to develop his first
turbojet engine designs independently during the same period that
Frank Whittle was working on his own similar designs in Britain,
and their turbojet designs are said by some to be an example of
simultaneous invention. However, Frank Whittle was already working
on his design in the late 1920s and openly patented the design in
1930, a full seven years before Ohain's design ran. Ohain
presented his idea to Ernst Heinkel, who agreed to help develop
the concept. Von Ohain successfully demonstrated his first engine,
the Heinkel HeS 1 in 1937, and plans were quickly made to test a
similar engine in an aircraft. The He 178 was designed around von
Ohain's third engine design, the HeS 3, which burned diesel fuel.
The result was a small aircraft with a metal fuselage of
conventional configuration and construction. The jet intake was in
the nose, and the aircraft was fitted with tailwheel
undercarriage. The main landing gear was intended to be
retractable, but remained fixed in "down" position
throughout the flight trials. Heinkel had developed the turbojet
engine and the testbed aircraft, the Heinkel He 178 V1, in great
secrecy. They were kept secret even from the German air force, and
on November 1, 1939, after the German victory in Poland, Heinkel
arranged a demonstration of the jet for officials, which Herman
Goering, commander in chief of the Luftwaffe, did not attend.
Ernst Udet and Erhard Milch, Minister of Aircraft Production and
Supply watched the aircraft perform, but were unimpressed. While a
technical success, speeds were limited to 598 kilometres per hour
(372 mph) even when fitted with more powerful HeS 6 1,300lb thrust
engines and combat endurance was only 10 minutes. Undeterred,
Heinkel decided to embark on the development of a twin-engine jet
fighter, the He 280 as a private venture using what had been
learned from the He 178 prototype. The sole He 178 V1 airframe was
placed on display at the Berlin Aviation Museum, where it was
destroyed in an air raid in 1943. On Sale Until Midnight Tonight

The United States: The Red Scare: The Second Red Scare: The Alien
Registration Act (The Smith Act): The Peekskill Riots: -- A
concert in Lakeland Acres, just north of Peekskill, New York by
black singer Paul Robeson, who was well known for his strong
pro-trade union stance, civil rights activism, communist
affiliations, and anti-colonialism, is disrupted by a riot
instigated and provoked by whites angry at Robeson's political
stands. The concert was organized as a benefit for the Civil
Rights Congress (CRC), which was involved in representing African
Americans sentenced to death and other highly egregious cases.
Robeson had given three earlier concerts in Peekskill without
incident, but in recent years Robeson had been increasingly vocal
against the Ku Klux Klan and other forces of white supremacy, both
domestically and internationally. Robeson specifically made a
transformation from someone who was primarily a singer into a
political persona who vocally supported, what were at the time
considered, "communist" causes, including the
decolonization of Africa, anti-Jim Crow legislation, and peace
with the USSR. Robeson had also appeared before the House
Committee on Un-American Activities to oppose a bill that would
require communists to register as foreign agents and, just months
before the concerts in 1949, he had appeared at the
Soviet-sponsored World Peace Conference in Paris. Referring to the
growing tensions between the USA and the USSR, he stated: "We
in America do not forget that it was the backs of white workers
from Europe and on the backs of millions of blacks that the wealth
of America was built. And we are resolved to share it equally. We
reject any hysterical raving that urges us to make war on anyone.
Our will to fight for peace is strong...We shall support peace and
friendship among all nations, with Soviet Russia and the People's
Republics." Despite the certainty of this quote, what came
over the wires of the Associated Press (AP) to news agencies in
the United States, which later examination of time records showed
AP both fabricated and dispatched on its wires as Robeson began
speaking, quoted him as follows: "We colonial peoples have
contributed to the building of the United States and are
determined to share its wealth. We denounce the policy of the
United States government which is similar to Hitler and
Goebbels... It is unthinkable that American Negros would go to war
on behalf of those who have oppressed us for generations against
the Soviet Union which in one generation has lifted our people to
full human dignity." The comment was not investigated by the
American press for its veracity and there was nationwide
condemnation of Robeson. In the early stages of the Cold War and
its accompanying wide anti-communist sentiments in the West, this
statement was seen by many as anti-American. The local paper, the
Peekskill Evening Star, condemned the concert and encouraged
people to make their position on communism felt, but did not
directly espouse violence. The riots were explicitly racist, with
the rioters shouting racist terms for African Americans and Jews,
burning crosses, and lynching effigies of Robeson both in
Peekskill and in other areas of the United States. The concert,
organized as a benefit for the Civil Rights Congress, was
scheduled to take place on August 27 in Lakeland Acres, just north
of Peekskill. Before Robeson arrived, a mob of locals attacked
concert-goers with baseball bats and rocks. The local police
arrived hours later and did little to intervene. Thirteen people
were seriously injured, Robeson was lynched in effigy and a cross
seen burning on an adjacent hillside. The concert was then
postponed until September 4. Following the concert, request for
Klan memberships from the Peekskill area numbered 748 persons.
Robeson's longtime friend and Peekskill resident, Helen Rosen, who
had agreed to collect Robeson at the train station, had heard on
the radio that protesters were massing at the concert grounds.
Robeson drove with Rosen and two others to the concert site and
saw marauding groups of youngsters, a burning cross on a nearby
hill and a jeering crowd throwing rocks and chanting "Dirty
Commie" and "Dirty Kikes." Robeson made more than
one attempt to get out of the car and confront the mob but was
restrained by his friends. The media were flooded with reactions
and charges. The Joint Veterans Council of Peekskill refused to
admit any involvement, describing its activities as a "protest
parade... held without disorder and... perfectly disbanded."
Peekskill police officials said the picnic grounds had been
outside their jurisdiction; a state police spokesman said there
had never been a request for state troopers. The commander of
Peekskill Post 274 of the American Legion stated: "Our
objective was to prevent the Paul Robeson concert and I think our
objective was reached." Following a meeting of local
citizens, union members, and Robeson supporters who formed "The
Westchester Committee for Law and Order", it was unanimously
determined that Robeson should be invited back to perform at
Peekskill. Representatives from various left wing unions - the Fur
and Leather Workers, the Longshoremen and the United Electrical
Workers - all agreed to converge and serve as a wall of defense
around the concert grounds. Ten union men slept on the property of
the Rosens, effectively guarding it. A call was then put out by
the "Emergency Committee to Protest the Peekskill Riot."
On Tuesday, August 30, an overflow crowd of three thousand people
assembled peacefully and without incident at the Golden Gate
Ballroom in Harlem to hear Robeson speak "I will be loyal to
America of true traditions; to the America of the abolitionists,
of Harriet Tubman, of Thaddeus Stevens, of those who fought for my
people's freedom, not of those who tried to enslave them. And I
will have no loyalty to the Forrestals, to the Harrimans, to the
WallStreeters... the surest way to get police protection is to
have it very clear that we'll protect ourselves, and good!... I'll
be back with my friends in Peekskill...". The rescheduled
September 4, 1949 concert itself was free from violence, though
marred by the presence of a police helicopter overhead and the
flushing out of at least one sniper's nest. The concert was
located on the grounds of the old Hollow Brook Golf Course in
Cortlandt Manor, near the site of the original concert. Twenty
thousand people showed up. Security was organized by the Communist
Party and Communist dominated labor unions. The men were directed
by the Communist Party and some unions to form a line around the
outer edge of the concert area and were sitting with Robeson on
the stage. They were there to fight any protestors who objected to
Robeson's presence. They effectively kept the local police from
the concert area. The musicians performed without incident. On

August 27, 1952: #BOTD: #HBD! Paul
Reubens, comedian, writer, and producer, best known for his
character Pee-Wee Herman (d. July 30, 2023) is #born Paul
Rubenfeld into a Jewish family in Peekskill, New York. His father
had flown for Britain's Royal Air Force and for the U.S. Army Air
Forces in World War II, and later became one of the founding
pilots of the Israeli Air Force during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.
An Orthodox Jew, he was one of five Jewish pilots to fly against
Arab forces in smuggled fighter planes. Reubens spent much of his
childhood in Oneonta, New York. As a child, he frequented the
Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, whose winter
headquarters were in Sarasota. The circus atmosphere sparked
Reubens's interest in entertainment, and influenced his later
work. He also loved to watch reruns of I Love Lucy, which made him
want to make people laugh. Paul Reubens joined the Los Angeles
troupe The Groundlings in the 1970s, and started his career as an
improvisational comedian and stage actor. In 1982, Reubens began
appearing in a show about a character he had been developing for
years. The show was called The Pee-Wee Herman Show, and ran for
five sold-out months; HBO also produced a successful special about
it. Pee-Wee became an instant cult figure and, for the next
decade, Reubens was completely committed to his character, doing
all of his public appearances and interviews as Pee-Wee. His
feature film, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure (1985), directed by Tim
Burton, was a financial and critical success, and soon developed
into a cult film. Its sequel, Big Top Pee-Wee (1988), was less
successful. Between 1986 and 1990, Reubens starred as Pee-Wee in
the CBS Saturday-morning children's program Pee-Wee's Playhouse.
Thereafter, Reubens decided to take a sabbatical from Pee-Wee. In
July 1991, Reubens was arrested for indecent exposure in an adult
theater in Sarasota, Florida. The arrest set off a chain reaction
of national media attention that changed the general public's view
of Reubens and Pee-Wee. The arrest postponed Reubens' involvement
in major projects until 1999, when he appeared in several
big-budget projects including Mystery Men (1999) and Blow (2001),
and Reubens started giving interviews as himself rather than as
Pee-Wee. Since 2006, Reubens has been making cameos and
appearances in numerous projects, such as Reno 911! (2006), 30
Rock (2007), Pushing Daisies (2007), The Blacklist (2014-2015),
Accidental Love (2015) and Mosaic (2018). He also played the voice
role of Pavel in the Disney XD television series Tron: Uprising
(2012-2013). Since the 1990s, Reubens has worked on two possible
Pee-Wee films: one dark and adult, dubbed The Pee-Wee Herman
Story, the other a family-friendly epic adventure called Pee-Wee's
Playhouse: The Movie. In 2010, he starred on Broadway in The
Pee-Wee Herman Show. In 2016, Reubens co-wrote and starred in the
Netflix original film Pee-Wee's Big Holiday, reprising his role as
Pee-Wee Herman. Paul Reubens died on a Sunday of acute hypoxic
respiratory failure at age 70 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in
Los Angeles; the public is not informed until the following
afternoon. At the time of his death he was diagnosed with both
myelogenous leukemia and metastatic lung cancer. He had been
diagnosed six years earlier, but had not revealed his diagnosis to
the public. Following his death, a statement written by Reubens
was released: "Please accept my apology for not going public
with what I've been facing the last six years. I have always felt
a huge amount of love and respect from my friends, fans and
supporters. I have loved you all so much and enjoyed making art
for you." Reubens was cremated, and his remains are interred
at Hollywood Forever Cemetery. On Sale Until Midnight Tonight PT!

( #JCKaelin here: This man, Samuel
Nicholas, the founder of the United States Marines, served during
the American Revolutionary War under Commodore Esek Hopkins, the
brother of my ancestor Stephen Hopkins, who was a founding father
of the United States Of America, governor of the Colony of Rhode
Island and Providence Plantations, a Chief Justice of the Rhode
Island Supreme Court, and a signer of the Declaration Of
Independence. And they were all to a man Freemasons too ;) ).
========= August 27, 1790: #DOTD: #RIP: Samuel Nicholas, the first
officer commissioned in the United States Continental Marines,
Freemason and by tradition considered to be the first Commandant
of the Marine Corps (Birthdate Unknown, 1744) #dies in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the city of his birth, during an
epidemic of yellow fever, and is buried in the Friends Graveyard
at Arch Street Friends Meeting House. In a somber tradition,
Samuel Nicholas's grave in the Arch Street Friends Meeting
graveyard in Philadelphia is marked with a wreath at dawn by a
group of Marines annually on November 10 to celebrate his role in
the founding of the Corps. Samuel Nicholas was born the youngest
of the three children of Anthony and Mary (Shute Cowman) Nicholas.
His father was a blacksmith. and his uncle was Attwood Shute, the
Mayor of Philadelphia (1756-1758). Nicholas was educated at the
Academy and College of Philadelphia (now the University of
Pennsylvania), Class of 1759, and was a Freemason who belonged to
a Masonic Lodge that met at Tun Tavern, a tavern and brewery in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, which was a founding or early meeting
place for a number of notable groups. It is traditionally regarded
as the site where what became the United States Marine Corps held
its first recruitment drive during the American Revolution. It is
also regarded as one of the "birthplaces of Masonic teachings
in America". Although tradition places the U.S. Marine Corps'
first recruiting post at Tun Tavern, the historian Edwin Simmons
surmises that it was more likely the Conestoga Waggon [sic], a
tavern owned by the Nicholas family. Each year on November 10,
U.S. Marines worldwide toast the memory of the Tun Taven as the
officially-acknowledged birthplace of their service branch. In
homage to the likely 1775 Tun Tavern menu, the U.S. Marine Corps
National Museum located in Quantico, Virginia, contains a Tun
Tavern-themed restaurant, whose lunch menu features beer and other
fermented (alcoholic) beverages, peanut soup and bread pudding,
the non-alcoholic recipe of which remains a traditional staple
among some U.S. Marine food services to this day. The tavern was
erected in 1686 at the intersection of King (later called Water)
Street and Tun Alley by settler Joshua Carpenter, brother of
Samuel Carpenter, a Quaker merchant who made a fortune trading in
Barbados. Joshua Carpenter built the Tun on the caraway that led
to Carpenter's Wharf. Tun Tavern was named for the Old English
word "tun", meaning a barrel or keg of beer. In the
1740s, a restaurant appellation, "Peggy Mullan's Red Hot Beef
Steak Club" was added to the name of the tavern. Tun Tavern
hosted the first meetings of a number of organizations. In 1720,
the first meetings of the St. George's Society (a charitable
organization founded to assist needy Englishmen arriving in the
new colony - predecessor of today's Sons of the Society of St.
George) were held there. In 1732, the tavern hosted the first
meetings of St. John's Lodge No. 1 of the Grand Lodge Of
Pennsylvania Masonic Temple. The Masonic Temple of Philadelphia
recognizes Tun Tavern as the birthplace of Masonic teachings in
America. In 1747, Tun Tavern became the founding place of the St.
Andrew's Society, which like the St. George's Society, helped
newly arrived Scottish. Tun Tavern was a significant meeting place
for other groups and individuals. In 1756, Benjamin Franklin used
the inn as a recruitment gathering point for the Pennsylvania
militia as it prepared to fight Native American uprisings. The
tavern later hosted a meeting of George Washington, Thomas
Jefferson and the Continental Congress. In October 1775 a seven
man Naval Committee including John Adams appointed by Congress
crafted articles of war to build America's first naval fleet. In
1781, near the end of the American Revolution, Tun Tavern burned
down. Its former structure stood at a location now occupied by
Interstate 95, where it passes Penn's Landing. Tun Alley once
existed between Walnut and Chestnut Streets east of Front Street.
A commemorative marker on the east side of Front Street indicates
the site, across from Sansom Walk. It is listed on Google Maps as
located at 125-171 S Front St, Philadelphia, PA 19106. On November
28, 1775, Nicholas was commissioned a "Captain of Marines"
by the Second Continental Congress, which was the first commission
issued in the Continental Naval Service. 18 days after the
Continental Congress resolved on November 10 1775, "That two
battalions of Marines be raised consisting of one Colonel, two
Lieutenant-Colonels, two Majors, and other officers, as usual in
other regiments; that they consist of an equal number of Privates
with other battalions; that particular care be taken that no
persons be appointed to offices, or enlisted into said battalions,
but such as are good seamen, or so acquainted with maritime
affairs as to be able to serve by sea when required; that they be
enlisted and commissioned to serve for and during the present war
with Great Britain and the Colonies, unless dismissed by order of
Congress; that they be distinguished by the names of the First and
Second Battalion of Marines." Captain Nicholas no sooner
received official confirmation of his appointment to office than
he established recruiting headquarters in Philadelphia. By January
1776, having recruited a sufficient number of Marines for the
vessels that comprised the Continental Navy in the waters of
Philadelphia, Capt. Nicholas assumed command of the Marine
Detachment on board the Alfred. With Commodore Esek Hopkins in
command, the Alfred set sail from Philadelphia on the morning of
January 4 1776. The following month witnessed the baptismal fire
of the Marines at The Battle Of Nassau. Lord Dunmore, the royal
governor of Virginia, had collected a store of arms and provisions
at New Providence, in the Bahamas. Dunmore's forces had done a
great deal of injury along the Colonial coast, especially the
shore of Virginia. Commodore Hopkins had been ordered to proceed
to Abaco in the Bahamas, and from there to operate against the
forces of Lord Dunmore. Commodore Hopkins decided to make an
attack on New Providence, capture the enemy's stores, and destroy
his supplies. Capt Nicholas was placed in command of the landing
party of 234 Marines. This attack, the first successful landing
engaged in by Continental Marines, saw the capture of Nassau on
March 3, 1776 without a fight. On April 6, 1776, the Marines
participated in the first naval battle between an American
squadron and a British warship, when HMS Glasgow came upon the
squadron. On June 25, 1776, Congress placed Nicholas "at the
head of the Marines with the rank of Major". Accordingly,
Commodore Esek Hopkins (brother of Stephen Hopkins, a founding
father of the United States Of America, governor of the Colony of
Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, a Chief Justice of the
Rhode Island Supreme Court, and a signer of the Declaration Of
Independence, and an ancestor of J. C. Kaelin) was advised to send
Major Nicholas to Philadelphia, with dispatches for the
Continental Congress. With notification of his promotion he was
ordered to report to the Marine Committee. The Committee detached
him from the Alfred and ordered him to remain in the city, "to
discipline four companies of Marines and prepare them for service
as Marine guards for the frigates on the stocks". Having
recruited and thoroughly organised the companies, he requested
arms and equipment for them. In December 1776, Major Nicholas
wrote to Congress: "The enemy having overrun the Jerseys, and
our army being greatly reduced, I was ordered to march with three
of the companies to be under the command of His Excellency, the
Commander-in-Chief." This was the first example of a
battalion of Marines about to serve as an actual fighting unit
under the direct command of Army authority. The Marines did not,
however, engage in the attack on Trenton, on December 26, 1776,
which followed General George Washington's crossing of the
Delaware River. They were attached to General John Cadwalader's
division, which was ordered to cross the Delaware to Burlington,
New Jersey, south of Trenton, in concert with Washington's
crossing to the north on the night of December 25, 1776, but was
turned back due to ice floes on the river. After the first Battle
of Trenton, the battalion of Marines under the command of Maj.
Nicholas participated in a battle with a detachment of
Cornwallis's main army at Princeton, New Jersey. During the
ensuing months, Nicholas's battalion served both as infantry and
artillery, participating in several skirmishes. Following the
British evacuation of Philadelphia in June 1778, the Marine
Barracks were reestablished and recruiting resumed. From then
until the close of the war, Nicholas's duties at Philadelphia were
similar to those of later Commandants. Moreover, he was actively
in charge of recruiting, and at times acted as Muster Master of
the Navy. On November 20, 1779, Nicholas wrote Congress to request
he be put in charge of the Marine Detachment aboard the 74-gun
ship of the line America, then being constructed in Portsmouth,
New Hampshire. However, Congress was firm in its intention that
Nicholas remain in Philadelphia. Upon her completion, the America
was presented to France as a gift. After the Navy and Continental
Marines were disbanded following the end of the American
Revolutionary War in 1783, Nicholas returned to civilian life and
became an original member of the Pennsylvania Society of the
Cincinnati. Three ships in the United States Navy have been named
the USS Nicholas in his honor. A British 6-pounder cannon,
captured by Major Nicholas' Marines at Nassau, is on display at
Fort Phoenix in Fairhaven, Massachusetts. On Sale Until Midnight

Atlantic Revolutions: The French Revolution: The French

Federalist Revolts: -- A royalist rebellion in the southern French
city of Toulon against the French Republic occurs, and the city
admits the British and Spanish fleets to seize its port,
immediately leading to the four-month Siege Of Toulon Of 1793 by
French Revolutionary forces. After French revolutionary radicals
arrested the moderate Girondist deputies on the June 2, 1793
during the insurrection of May 31 - June 2, 1793, there followed a
series of insurrections within the French cities of Lyon, Avignon,
Nimes and Marseille. In Toulon, the revolutionaries evicted the
existing Jacobin faction but were soon supplanted by the more
numerous royalists. Upon the announcement of the recapture of
Marseille and of the reprisals which had taken place there at the
hands of the revolutionaries, the royalist forces, directed by the
Baron d'Imbert, called for aid from the Anglo-Spanish fleet. On
August 28, Admiral Sir Samuel Hood of the Royal Navy and Admiral
Juan de Langara of the Spanish Navy, committed a force of 13,000
British, Spanish, Neapolitan and Piedmontese troops to the French
royalists' cause. This was a serious blow to the republic, as the
city had a key naval arsenal and was the base for 26 ships of the
line (about one third of the total available to the French Navy).
Without this port there was no hope for French naval ambitions. As
a result, any ambition to challenge the Allies, and specifically
the British, for control of the seas would be out of the question.
In addition, its loss could set a dangerous precedent for other
areas that menaced the republic with revolt. The survival of the
Republic was at stake. On 1 October, Baron d'Imbert proclaimed the
young Louis XVII to be king of France, and hoisted the French
royalist flag of the fleur de lys, delivering the town of Toulon
to the British navy. The Siege of Toulon followed, lasting from
August 29 to December 19, 1793, resulting in the fall of Toulon to
republican forces. ========= August 27, 1798: The Age Of

Monarchy In The UK: British Royal History DVD, Download, USB Drive
August 27, 1172: The English Monarchy
(The Monarchy Of The Kingdom Of England): Coronations: -- King
Henry II Of England crowns his heirs - his son Henry The Young and
his son's wife, Margaret Of France, the daughter of King Louis VII
of France - as Junior King Of England Henry The Young King and
Junior Queen Of England Margaret respectively at Winchester
Cathedral, but gives them no actual authority, as the coronation
was intended by King Henry II Of England merely to secure
political good will between himself and King Louis VII of France.
Henry II, also known as Henry Curtmantle (French: Court-manteau),
Henry FitzEmpress or Henry Plantagenet, who ruled as Count of
Anjou, Count of Maine, Duke of Normandy, Duke of Aquitaine, Count
of Nantes, King Of England and Lord of Ireland, and at various
times also controlled Wales, Scotland and Brittany (d. 1189) is
#born Henry Plantagenet in Normandy at Le Mans, the eldest child
of the Empress Matilda - also known as the Empress Maude, one of
the claimants to the English throne during the civil war known as
the Anarchy - and her second husband, Geoffrey Plantagenet, Count
of Anjou. In 1151, Henry married Eleanor Of Aquitaine, whose
marriage to Louis VII of France had recently been annulled. On
December 19, 1154: he was crownd Henry II Of England at
Westminster Abbey. Henry was an energetic and sometimes ruthless
ruler, driven by a desire to restore the lands and privileges of
his grandfather Henry I. During the early years of his reign the
younger Henry restored the royal administration in England,
re-established hegemony over Wales and gained full control over
his lands in Anjou, Maine and Touraine. Henry's desire to reform
the relationship with the Church led to conflict with his former
friend Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury. This
controversy lasted for much of the 1160s and resulted in Becket's
murder in 1170. Henry soon came into conflict with Louis VII and
the two rulers fought what has been termed a "cold war"
over several decades. Henry expanded his empire, often at Louis'
expense, taking Brittany and pushing east into central France and
south into Toulouse; despite numerous peace conferences and
treaties, no lasting agreement was reached. By 1172, he controlled
England, large parts of Wales, the eastern half of Ireland and the
western half of France, an area that would later come to be called
the Angevin Empire. Henry and Eleanor had eight children. As they
grew up, tensions over the future inheritance of the empire began
to emerge, encouraged by Louis and his son King Philip II. In 1173
Henry's heir apparent, "Young Henry", rebelled in
protest; he was joined by his brothers Richard and Geoffrey and by
their mother, Eleanor. France, Scotland, Brittany, Flanders, and
Boulogne allied themselves with the rebels. The Great Revolt was
only defeated by Henry's vigorous military action and talented
local commanders, many of them "new men" appointed for
their loyalty and administrative skills. Young Henry and Geoffrey
revolted again in 1183, resulting in Young Henry's death. The
Norman invasion of Ireland provided lands for his youngest son
John, but Henry struggled to find ways to satisfy all his sons'
desires for land and immediate power. Philip successfully played
on Richard's fears that Henry would make John king, and a final
rebellion broke out in 1189. Decisively defeated by Philip and
Richard and suffering from a bleeding ulcer, Henry retreated to
Chinon castle in Anjou, where he died. Henry's empire quickly
collapsed during the reign of his youngest son John, however many
of the changes Henry introduced during his long rule had long-term
consequences. Henry's legal changes are generally considered to
have laid the basis for the English Common Law, while his
intervention in Brittany, Wales and Scotland shaped the
development of their societies and governmental systems. "The
Lion in Winter" is a 1966 play by James Goldman, depicting
the personal and political conflicts of Henry II Of England, his
wife Eleanor Of Aquitaine, their children and their guests during
Christmas 1183. It premiered on Broadway at the Ambassador Theatre
on March 3, 1966, starring Robert Preston and Rosemary Harris, who
won a Tony Award for her portrayal of Eleanor. It was adapted by
Goldman into an Academy Award-winning 1968 film of the same name,
starring Peter O'Toole and Katharine Hepburn. The play has been
produced numerous times, including Broadway and West End revivals.

The Romanian Declaration Of War Against Austria-Hungary: -- Two
years after the First World War broke out, Romania declares war on
Austria-Hungary, inadvertantly one day early, in accordance with a
secret treaty signed with the Allies (France, Britain, Italy, and
Russia) on August 17, 1916 that pledged Romania to declare war on
Austria-Hungary by August 28. The Romanian ambassador in Vienna,
however, actually transmitted the declaration of war to
Austria-Hungary on August 27, making that date the official date
of The Romanian Declaration Of War Against Austria-Hungary.
Germany, caught by surprise, responded with a declaration of war
on Romania the next day, August 28, the date the treaty originally
called for Romania to declare war on Austria-Hungary. The dates of
the Bulgarian and Ottoman declarations of war on Romania are
disputed. Bulgaria has been cited for not issuing a declaration of
war prior to its attack on Romania of August 31, although some
sources assert such a declaration was made on August 30 or
September 1. The Ottoman declaration took place either on August
29, August 30 or September 1. While this surprising disclarity of
when all of these war declarations were made, Romania found
herself within two days of her own war declaration at war with all

August 27, 1967: #DOTD: #RIP: Brian
Epstein, English businessman, impresario, music entrepreneur and
manager, most famous as the manager of the Beatles from 1962 until
his death (b. September 19, 1934) #dies under controversial
circumstances of an overdose of Carbrital, a hypnotic preparation
combining the barbiturate pentobarbital with the bromide
carbromal, in his locked bedroom on 27 August 1967. He was
discovered after his butler who, having been unable to rouse
Epstein via his locked bedroom door, called Epstein's PA, Joanne
Petersen. She arrived, failed to rouse him, and called his doctor
who, with the butler, broke down the door and found Epstein in his
bed, appearing to be asleep, an open book near his hand and some
digestive biscuits on the nightstand. When they realised that he
was dead, staff swept the house for contraband and then called the
police. Epstein was found on a single bed, dressed in pyjamas,
with various correspondence spread over a second single bed. At
the statutory inquest his death was officially ruled an accident,
caused by a gradual buildup of Carbrital combined with alcohol in
his system. It was revealed that he had taken six Carbrital pills
to sleep, which was probably normal for him, but in combination
with alcohol they reduced his tolerance. The Beatles were on a
retreat in Bangor in North Wales at the time, with the Indian guru
Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Epstein had previously agreed to travel to
Bangor after the August Bank Holiday. The second of two shows by
Jimi Hendrix at Epstein's Saville Theatre was cancelled on the
evening of Epstein's death. Peter Brown wrote in his memoir, The
Love You Make: An Insider's Story of the Beatles, that he had once
found a suicide note written by Epstein and had spoken with him
about it. According to Brown the note read in part, "This is
all too much and I can't take it any more." Brown had also
found a will in which Epstein left his house and money to his
mother and his brother, with Brown also being named as a minor
beneficiary. When confronted with the notes, Epstein told Brown
that he would be grateful if Brown did not tell anyone, and that
he was sorry he had made Brown worry. He explained that when he
wrote the note and composed the will he had simply taken one pill
too many, and that he had no intention of overdosing, promising to
be more careful in the future. Brown later wrote that he wondered
if he had done the right thing by not showing the note to
Epstein's doctor, Norman Cowan, who would have stopped prescribing
drugs. The coroner, Gavin Thurston, told the Westminster inquest
that Epstein's death was caused by an overdose of Carbrital and
ruled it as an accidental death. The pathologist, Donald Teare,
stated that Epstein had been taking bromide in the form of
Carbrital for some time, and that the barbiturate level in
Epstein's blood was a "low fatal level". The Beatles did
not attend Epstein's funeral, both to allow his family some
privacy and to avoid attracting fans and the media. According to
Geoffrey Ellis, chief executive of NEMS Enterprises, the day
before the funeral George Harrison had given Nat Weiss, Epstein's
good friend and confidant, a single flower (Ellis remembers it as
a chrysanthemum) wrapped in a newspaper on behalf of all four
Beatles, with instructions to place the flower on Brian's coffin
as a final farewell. However, flowers are forbidden at Jewish
funerals and burials. Weiss and Ellis discussed this dilemma while
walking back to the grave, where they observed two men beginning
to shovel dirt onto the casket. Ellis later wrote: "Nat, who
himself was Jewish, cast the newspaper package unopened onto
Brian's coffin, where it was swiftly covered by earth."
Epstein was buried in section A grave H12, in the Long Lane Jewish
Cemetery, Aintree, Liverpool. The service at the graveside was
held by Rabbi Norman Solomon, who said, disparagingly, that
Epstein was "a symbol of the malaise of our generation".
A few weeks later, on October 17, all four Beatles attended a
memorial service for Epstein at the New London Synagogue in St
John's Wood (near Abbey Road Studios), which was officiated by
Rabbi Louis Jacobs. The Bee Gees' 1968 song "In the Summer of
His Years" was written and recorded as a tribute to Epstein.
Epstein was upset that he was not honoured along with Lennon,
McCartney, Harrison, and Starr when they received the MBE in 1965,
though Harrison once said that the MBE stood for "Mister
Brian Epstein"; The Beatles were among the earliest entrants
into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but Epstein was not included
in the Hall's "Non-Performers' Section" until 2014, and
not without controversy as he was inducted alongside Rolling
Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham who refused to attend, in part
in protest at what he perceived as the indignity of a joint
induction. Brian Epstein was born Brian Samuel Epstein to a Jewish
family at 4 Rodney Street, Liverpool, Merseyside, North West
England. Epstein first discovered the Beatles in November 1961
during a lunchtime performance at The Cavern Club. He was
instantly impressed and saw great potential in the group. Epstein
was rejected by nearly all major recording companies in London,
until he secured a meeting with George Martin, head of EMI's
Parlophone label. In May 1962, Martin agreed to sign the Beatles,
partly because of Epstein's conviction that the group would become
internationally famous. The Beatles' early success has been
attributed to Epstein's management style, and the band trusted him
without hesitation. In his 1970 Rolling Stone interview, John
Lennon commented that Epstein's death marked the beginning of the
end for the group: "I knew that we were in trouble then ... I
thought, 'We've fucking had it now.'" Paul McCartney
summarised the importance of Epstein when he was interviewed in
1997 for a BBC documentary about Epstein, saying, "If anyone
was the Fifth Beatle, it was Brian." On Sale Until Midnight

August 27, 1975: #DOTD: #RIP: Haile
Selassie, Ethiopian emperor, Ethiopia's regent from 1916 to 1930
and emperor from 1930 to 1974, member of the Solomonic Dynasty who
traced his lineage to Emperor Menelik I via his Shewan Amhara
royal ancestors as a great-grandson of king Sahle Selassie,
Chairperson of the Organisation Of African Unity (May 25, 1963 to
July 17, 1964, November 5, 1966 to September 11, 1967) (b. July
23, 1892) #dies under suspicious circumstances some eleven months
after the 1974 Ethiopian Coup D'Etat that removed Haile Selassie
from the throne. Ethiopian state media reported on August 28, 1975
that he had died of "respiratory failure" following
complications from a prostate examination followed up by a
prostate operation. Dr. Asrat Woldeyes denied that complications
had occurred, and rejected the government version of his death;
the prostate operation in question apparently had taken place
months before the state media claimed, and Haile Selassie had
apparently enjoyed strong health in his last days. In 1994, an
Ethiopian court found several former military officers guilty of
strangling the emperor to death in his bed. Three years after the
military socialist Derg regime was overthrown, the court charged
them with genocide and murder, claiming that it had obtained
documents attesting to a high-level order from the military regime
to assassinate Haile Selassie for leading a "feudal regime".
Documents have been widely circulated online showing the Derg's
final assassination order and bearing the military regime's seal
and signature. The veracity of these documents has been
corroborated by multiple former members of the military Derg
regime. The Soviet-backed People's Democratic Republic of
Ethiopia, the Derg's successor, fell in 1991. In 1992, Haile
Selassie's bones were found under a concrete slab on the palace
grounds, Haile Selassie's coffin rested in Bhata Church for nearly
a decade, near his great-uncle Menelik II's resting place. On
November 5, 2000, the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Addis Ababa gave
him a funeral, but the government refused calls to declare the
ceremony an official imperial funeral. Prominent Rastafari figures
such as Rita Marley participated in the funeral, but most
Rastafari rejected the event and refused to accept that the bones
were Haile Selassie's remains. There is some debate within the
Rastafari movement whether he actually died in 1975. Haile
Selassie I was born Ras Tafari Makonnan at Ethiopia's National
Palace in Addis Ababa. At the League Of Nations in 1936, the
emperor condemned the use of chemical weapons by Italy against his
people during the Second Italo-Ethiopian War in one of the
greatest public speeches of the twentieth century at The League Of
Nations. His internationalist views led to Ethiopia becoming a
charter member of the United Nations, and his political thought
and experience in promoting multilateralism and collective
security have proved seminal and enduring. His suppression of
rebellions among the landed aristocracy (the mesafint), which
consistently opposed his reforms, as well as what some critics
perceived to be Ethiopia's failure to modernize rapidly enough,
earned him criticism among some contemporaries and historians.
During his rule the Harari people were ethnically cleansed from
the Harari Region. His regime was also criticized by human rights
groups, such as Human Rights Watch, as autocratic and illiberal.
Among the Rastafari movement, whose followers are estimated to
number between 700,000 and one million, Haile Selassie is revered
as the returned messiah of the Bible, God incarnate. Beginning in
Jamaica in the 1930s, the Rastafari movement perceives Haile
Selassie as a messianic figure who will lead a future golden age
of eternal peace, righteousness, and prosperity. Haile Selassie
was an Ethiopian Orthodox Christian throughout his life. He is a
defining figure in Ethiopian history. The 1973 Wollo Famine in
Ethiopia, estimated to have killed 40,000 to 80,000 Ethiopians,
led to Haile Selassie's eventual removal from the throne. On Sale

August 27, 1943: World War II: The
Pacific War (The Asia-Pacific War, The Pacific Theater Of World
War II): The Pacific Ocean Theater Of World War II: Operation
Cartwheel: The Solomon Islands Campaign: The New Georgia Campaign
(The New Georgia Islands Campaign): -- Two days after the port at
Bairoko Harbor, 13 km (eight miles) north of the Japanese air base
at Munda that had been overrun on August 5, was taken after bloody
jungle fighting, the Japanese evacuate New Georgia Island. The
airstrip on Munda, the Japanese base on New Georgia Island that
had been used to attack American forces during the Battle Of
Guadalcanal, was the main objective of the assault on the island,
which had been occupied by the Empire Of Japan since the early
stages of the war. The Japanese built an airstrip, on the site of
today's Munda Airport, to support their forces fighting the Battle
Of Guadalcanal. A Japanese convoy put into Munda Point on November
24, 1942, and started construction under careful concealment from
the air by means of rows of coconut palms suspended by cable. The
airstrip was discovered by American planes on December 3, and the
first airstrikes were delivered by B-17 Flying Fortress bombers on
December 9. However, the Japanese were able to continue to use
Munda, despite regular bombardment from both air and sea, and the
Allies launched Operation Cartwheel in order to drive the Japanese
out of the Solomons and ultimately eliminate the large Japanese
base at Rabaul. The New Georgia Campaign was launched with
landings on New Georgia and nearby islands on June 30, 1943, when
mainly American but also Pacific Islander troops conducted the
Landings On Rendova and several other amphibious operations
throughout the New Georgia Group. The Allied forces spent July
1943 conducting the Drive On Munda Point, shelling and bombing
Japanese forces in and around Munda Airfield, fighting off a large
Japanese counterattack, and eventually closing in on Munda
overland, capturing it on August 4-5 during the Battle Of Munda
Point. The heavy fighting left thousands dead on both sides and
many more wounded. New Georgia was secured by American forces on
August 23, after weeks of difficult and bloody fighting that
continued on some nearby islands until October 1943. Donald
Gilbert Kennedy was a Coastwatcher stationed at Seghe (Segi) on
New Georgia during the Solomon Islands Campaign. For his services
as a Coastwatcher, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order
(DSO) (UK), and the Navy Cross (U.S.). Since 1978, the island has
been part of the independent state of Solomon Islands. On Sale

The United States: The 1968 United States Presidential Election:
The 1968 United States Democratic National Convention: -- The
Democratic Party continues on to the second day of its quadrennial
National Convention at the International Amphitheatre in Chicago,
Illinois to select a new presidential nominee in the aftermath of
the announcement by incumbent Democratic President Lyndon B.
Johnson that he would not seek reelection. The 1968 Democratic
National Convention was held from August 26 to August 29, 1968.
The keynote speaker was Senator Daniel Inouye of Hawaii. Vice
President Hubert Humphrey and Senator Edmund Muskie of Maine were
nominated for president and vice president, respectively. The most
contentious issues of the convention were the continuing American
military involvement in the Vietnam War and voting reform,
particularly expanding the right to vote for draft-age soldiers
(age 18) who were unable to vote as the voting age was 21. The
convention also marked a turning point where previously idle
groups such as youth and minorities became more involved in
politics and voting. The convention of 1968 was held during a year
of riots, political turbulence, and mass civil unrest. The
assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. in April of that year
inflamed racial tensions to an unprecedented level. King
assassination riots in more than 100 cities followed and marked
the end of the civil rights movement. The convention also followed
the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy on June 5. Kennedy's
assassination derailed the convention, paving the way for
Humphrey. Both Kennedy and Senator Eugene McCarthy of Minnesota
had been running for the Democratic nomination at the time. On
August 28, 1968, Hubert Humphrey won the Democratic Party's
presidential nomination. The Humphrey-Muskie ticket would be
defeated in the presidential election by the Republican ticket of
Richard Nixon and Spiro Agnew. On Sale Until Midnight Tonight PT!

The film is notable for Wexler's use of cinema verite-style documentary filmmaking techniques, as well as for combining fictional and non-fictional content. The movie was met with widespread acclaim from numerous critics, including Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel of Siskel & Ebert, both calling the movie a "well-crafted masterpiece." The movie was also named one of the greatest movies of 1969, as well as one of the most influential movies in the New Hollywood movement. Robert Forster was also met with universal acclaim for his performance. Plainfield, Wisconsin, gathered widespread notoriety in 1957 after
authorities discovered he had exhumed corpses from local
graveyards and fashioned trophies and keepsakes from their bones
and skin. Gein also confessed to killing two women: tavern owner
Mary Hogan in 1954 and hardware store owner Bernice Worden in
1957. Gein was initially found unfit to stand trial and confined
to a mental health facility. By 1968, he was judged competent to
stand trial; he was found guilty of the murder of Worden, but he
was found legally insane and was remanded to a psychiatric
institution. Ed Gein died at the Mendota Mental Health Institute
due to respiratory failure secondary to lung cancer at the age of
77. He is buried next to his family in the Plainfield Cemetery, in
a now-unmarked grave; over the years, souvenir seekers chipped
pieces from his gravestone at the Plainfield Cemetery, until the
stone itself was stolen in 2000. It was recovered in June 2001,

Julie Brown, English actress, television personality, SiriusXM DJ,
former MTV VJ and beauty, is #born Julie Dorne Brown in
Bedfordshire, England. Brown is best known as the host of the
television music show Club MTV, which ran from 1987 until 1992.
Brown's father was Jamaican and her mother British. Brown has six
siblings. Her father was in the Royal Air Force (RAF), and she
grew up on air force bases all around the world, including
Singapore and Cyprus, before returning to the United Kingdom,
where they settled in Bridgend, Wales. After winning the UK Disco
Dancing Championships, she went on to win the World Disco Dancing
Championship in 1979. Soon after, Brown began a career on British
television as presenter and guest on a number of children's
programmes, including the long-running show Crackerjack. Brown
also appeared as a dancer on Top Of The Pops in the early 1980s as
a member of the dance troupe Zoo. Brown became a presenter on the
pan-European music channel Music Box and, after moving to the
United States, eventually became an MTV VJ and went on to host the
Club MTV show in the late 1980s. That show had a format similar to
American Bandstand's but featured an exclusive lineup of dance
music. From this came her catchphrase, "Wubba Wubba Wubba",
after she accidentally read the T-shirt of a camera crewmember who
was holding the cue cards while on live TV. MTV capitalized on the
confusion between Downtown Julie Brown and comic actress Julie
Brown by sending the pair together as correspondents for MTV News
as well as by their "facing" each other on both their
shows (Club MTV and Just Say Julie). After leaving MTV, Brown went
on to work for ESPN conducting on-and-off field interviews with
football athletes. Brown then moved to Los Angeles to host the E
Entertainment channel's gossip show. She also became the host of
the syndicated radio program American Dance Traxx in March 1992
until its final broadcast in December 1993. Brown has appeared in
a number of movies and TV shows, including Spy Hard; Spring Break
'83; The Weird Al Show; B*A*P*S; Ride; Walker, Texas Ranger;
Battle Dome; Hey Arnold!; I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here!;
The Dog Whisperer; The Eric Andre Show; and RuPaul's Drag U. Most
recently, she appeared in television's Wife Swap on July 21, 2013.
She also appeared on the cover and posed nude for the August 1998
edition of Playboy. Brown is currently a host on the SiriusXM
channel '90s on 9. In addition to hosting programmes, she also
hosts "The Back In The Day Replay Countdown," on which
are played the 30 biggest songs of the week from a particular year
in the 1990s. Brown married film producer and former CEO of
Intermedia Martin Schuermann in 2001. They live in Marina del Rey,
California, with their daughter. On Sale Until Midnight Tonight
